Why the R34 GT-R is special — and what it's actually like

The R34 Skyline GT-R was built from 1999 to 2002, and there were only about 12,000 of them. That number explains a lot. It is not the fastest car of its generation by modern standards, and it was never sold new in most of the world. What it has instead is a very specific combination of engineering, scarcity, and cultural timing that no other Japanese car quite matches.

The engine everyone talks about

The RB26DETT is a 2.6-litre inline-six with two turbochargers, and it was originally designed to win Group A racing. That origin is why it is over-engineered for a road car: a cast-iron block, six individual throttle bodies, and internals built with racing loads in mind.

Officially it made 280 PS. That figure was the ceiling under a voluntary agreement among Japanese manufacturers at the time, not a measurement — most examples made more from the factory. The engine is well known for tolerating far higher outputs with the right supporting work, which is a large part of why it became a tuning icon.

The inline-six layout also matters for how it feels: it builds power smoothly rather than in a single hit, and the sound at partial throttle is much less dramatic than people expect. The drama arrives later than you think.

ATTESA E-TS Pro — the part that's harder to explain

The GT-R sends power to all four wheels, but it is rear-biased by default. The ATTESA system continuously decides how much torque the front axle should receive, based on wheel speed, throttle, steering and lateral g.

The practical effect is that it drives like a rear-wheel-drive car until the moment it doesn't. On a damp Tokyo expressway ramp, the car quietly does something to keep you pointed the right way and you barely notice it happening. That undramatic competence is the R34's actual character, more than any straight-line number.

The R34 also added an active limited-slip rear differential, and a lot of its reputation for feeling planted comes from these two systems working together rather than from raw grip.

The screen on the dashboard

The R34 has a 5.8-inch multifunction display in the centre of the dash showing boost pressure, oil and water temperature, and g-forces in real time. In 1999 this was extraordinary — most cars had a radio and a clock.

It has since become one of the most recognisable interiors in car culture, and it is the single thing passengers photograph most on our tours. The V-spec II version added more channels to it.

Why the price went up

Three things happened at once.

Production was tiny and stopped in 2002. No successor used the Skyline GT-R name; the R35 that followed dropped "Skyline" entirely and was a very different car.

Import restrictions kept it out of the largest market. The United States effectively could not import an R34 until it reached 25 years of age, which for the earliest cars means 2024. Demand built up for two decades before supply was legally possible.

The car became a cultural object. Games and films put the R34 in front of an enormous audience that would never see one in traffic, and that audience aged into buying power.

The result is that a car that cost roughly the price of a nice sedan in 1999 now trades for many times that, and clean unmodified examples are increasingly kept off the road.

What it's actually like as a passenger

Honestly: quieter and more civilised at low speed than almost anyone expects. The R34 was a road car, and it behaves like one in traffic. The ride is firm but not punishing. The turbos are not loud from inside.

What you notice instead is the shape of the acceleration — it gathers, then gathers harder, and the car stays completely flat while doing it. On the C1 loop at night, the sensation is less "violent" and more "the road got shorter."

You also notice the driving position. It sits you low with a very upright, close steering wheel, which feels dated in a good way — it is unmistakably a car from before every interior converged on the same shape.

R34 vs R33 vs R32 — the short version

  • R32 (1989–1994) — the original of the modern GT-R line and the lightest. Rawer, smaller, less refined, and the one that built the reputation on the track.
  • R33 (1995–1998) — bigger and more stable, historically the least loved and therefore the best value. Rehabilitated a lot in recent years.
  • R34 (1999–2002) — the shortest wheelbase of the later cars, the sharpest steering, the display, and the last to carry the Skyline GT-R name.

There is no objectively correct answer here, but the R34 is the one people arrive in Tokyo specifically wanting to see.

About driving one yourself

Japan recognises only International Driving Permits issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention. If yours was issued under the 1968 Vienna Convention, it is not valid here.

Beyond the paperwork, there is a practical reality: very few operators anywhere will hand the keys of an appreciating, effectively irreplaceable car to a visitor. Parts for the RB26 are getting genuinely scarce, and body panels for the R34 are worse. This is why almost every real R34 experience in Tokyo is a driver-guided one — not as a compromise, but because it's the arrangement that lets the car keep existing.
